Sexuality and Intimacy Counselling

Cancer and its treatment can affect sexuality, intimacy, body confidence, self-esteem, and emotional relationships. Breast surgery, amputation, colostomy, hormonal changes, fatigue, pain, and treatment-related physical changes may influence sexual wellbeing. Patients may experience embarrassment, reduced confidence, fear of rejection, or concerns regarding how their partner may perceive them. Some individuals may avoid intimacy because they feel uncomfortable discussing changes in their body or physical functioning. Partners may also experience uncertainty regarding how to respond to these changes. Psycho-oncological counselling provides a confidential, sensitive, and respectful environment in which such concerns can be discussed. Counselling may help patients communicate their emotional and relational needs more openly and effectively. Psychological support can address body image, self-esteem, fear of rejection, emotional closeness, relationship adjustment, and intimacy concerns. Where appropriate and with the patient's consent, partners may be included in the counselling process to facilitate mutual understanding and communication. The approach respects individual values, boundaries, preferences, and readiness. The overall aim is to support healthy relationships, emotional connection, intimacy, confidence, and quality of life following cancer and its treatment.
