Post-Amputation Rehabilitation and Emotional Support

Psychological wellbeing is an integral component of comprehensive rehabilitation following amputation. Patients may experience emotional distress, reduced motivation, frustration, anxiety, or uncertainty while adapting to changes in mobility and physical functioning. Rehabilitation can be demanding and may involve repeated efforts, gradual progress, and occasional setbacks. Psycho-oncological counselling can help patients manage these emotional challenges and maintain realistic expectations throughout the rehabilitation process. Psychological support may assist individuals in establishing achievable goals and recognising incremental improvements in their functional recovery. For patients using prosthetic devices, counselling may address concerns related to appearance, functionality, comfort, confidence, and social acceptance. Support can also focus on changes in independence, family responsibilities, employment, education, and participation in community life. Patients may be encouraged to gradually resume meaningful activities according to their individual abilities and readiness. Emotional support can complement physical rehabilitation by strengthening motivation and promoting active participation in recovery. Counselling may also help patients develop greater confidence in managing new physical challenges and adapting to changes in daily functioning. The overall objective is to promote psychological adjustment, functional confidence, independence, and successful reintegration into everyday life.
