Book ConsultationPsychological support for individuals adjusting emotionally to sarcoma, limb loss, amputation, and changes in independence.

Amputation resulting from sarcoma or other cancer-related conditions can represent a major physical, psychological, and social transition. The loss of a limb may be associated with grief, changes in physical identity, reduced independence, altered functioning, and uncertainty regarding the future. Patients may experience sadness, anger, frustration, anxiety, helplessness, or difficulty accepting the changes brought about by surgery. Alterations in physical appearance may further influence body image, self-esteem, confidence, and interpersonal relationships. Psycho-oncological intervention provides a structured and supportive environment in which patients can process these complex emotional responses. Counselling can assist individuals in acknowledging their sense of loss while gradually developing acceptance of their changed circumstances. Psychological support may also address concerns relating to mobility, rehabilitation, education, employment, relationships, and social participation. Patients can be encouraged to recognise their continuing strengths, abilities, values, and personal identity beyond physical limitations. Support may also help individuals develop realistic expectations and psychological readiness for rehabilitation and prosthetic adaptation where appropriate. The overall goal is to promote emotional adjustment, resilience, confidence, and renewed participation in meaningful areas of life following amputation.
