Relationship and Social Concerns

Cancer and major surgical interventions may influence interpersonal relationships, communication, social participation, and confidence in interacting with others. Patients may withdraw from social situations because of concerns regarding appearance, disability, colostomy, fatigue, or potential judgement from others. Some individuals may fear being treated differently or may feel uncomfortable discussing their illness with friends, colleagues, or acquaintances. Changes in physical functioning can also affect family roles and a person's sense of independence. Psycho-oncological counselling can help patients explore the beliefs and fears contributing to social withdrawal. Psychological support may focus on improving communication, strengthening interpersonal confidence, and developing appropriate strategies for discussing personal needs. Patients can gradually be encouraged to reconnect with meaningful relationships and activities. Counselling may also assist individuals in establishing healthy boundaries while maintaining supportive connections. Returning to social participation can contribute to a greater sense of normality, identity, and emotional wellbeing. Support is tailored to the patient's readiness and individual circumstances. The overall aim is to strengthen relationships, rebuild social confidence, and facilitate meaningful participation in family, community, educational, and occupational life.
