Family and Caregiver Support

Cancer affects the emotional wellbeing of patients as well as their families and caregivers. Relatives may experience fear, anxiety, helplessness, sadness, uncertainty, or difficulty understanding how best to support the patient. Caregivers may additionally experience emotional exhaustion associated with treatment-related responsibilities, hospital visits, practical care, and changing family roles. Their own psychological needs can sometimes be overlooked while attention remains focused on the patient. Psycho-oncological support provides caregivers with an opportunity to express their concerns and receive appropriate emotional guidance. Family counselling can improve understanding of the patient's emotional responses and promote healthier communication within the family. Support may also assist relatives in responding constructively to changes in the patient's behaviour, mood, independence, and needs. Caregivers can be encouraged to maintain appropriate self-care and recognise the importance of managing their own emotional wellbeing. Where family conflict or communication difficulties arise, counselling can provide a structured environment for addressing these concerns. Strengthening family relationships can create a more supportive environment for the patient's recovery. The overall objective is to promote healthy family functioning while supporting the psychological wellbeing of both patients and caregivers.
