Counselling Support Following Mastectomy or Breast Surgery

Mastectomy and other breast-related surgical procedures may result in significant emotional and psychological adjustment for patients. Changes in physical appearance can affect body image, self-esteem, confidence, femininity, and personal identity. Patients may experience feelings of grief, sadness, loss, embarrassment, or concern about how their altered appearance may be perceived by others. Psycho-oncological counselling provides a safe and non-judgemental setting in which these experiences can be explored at the patient's own pace. Psychological support can facilitate gradual acceptance of physical changes while helping patients maintain a positive and integrated sense of identity. Counselling may address concerns related to clothing, social participation, scars, reconstruction, prosthetic options, and returning to normal activities. Relationship and intimacy concerns can also be explored sensitively, particularly where changes in body image affect emotional or sexual confidence. Patients may be supported in communicating their needs and concerns effectively with partners and family members. Through individualised psychological care, patients can develop healthier coping mechanisms and greater confidence in adapting to life after surgery. The overall aim is to facilitate emotional recovery, self-acceptance, dignity, and improved psychosocial wellbeing following breast surgery.
