Adjustment to Major Surgical Changes

Major cancer-related surgical procedures can result in significant changes in physical appearance, functioning, independence, lifestyle, and daily routines. Patients may require time and psychological support to understand and adapt to these changes. Emotional responses may include grief, sadness, anger, frustration, anxiety, uncertainty, or a sense of loss. Changes in physical functioning or appearance may also influence personal identity and self-perception. Some individuals may experience concerns regarding employment, family responsibilities, relationships, social participation, or their ability to resume previous activities. Psycho-oncological counselling provides an opportunity to explore these emotional responses in a supportive and structured environment. Psychological interventions can help patients develop appropriate coping strategies and gradually adapt to their altered circumstances. Counselling may also focus on identifying personal strengths, maintaining meaningful roles, and recognising areas where the individual retains choice and control. Family communication and adjustment to changing responsibilities may be addressed where required. Patients can be supported in developing realistic expectations regarding recovery and rehabilitation. The overall objective is to facilitate psychological adjustment, acceptance, confidence, and meaningful reintegration into daily life following major surgery.
